• A morning walk along Trilha Cláudio Coutinho – Before hitting the beach, take this 1.3 km (0.8 miles) scenic walking trail that starts right next to Praia Vermelha. However, timing is key: at high tide, the waves swallow most of the sand, so plan to arrive early in the morning during low tide for the best experience.

• Taxi/Uber: Set your destination to Praia da Joatinga. Once you arrive on Joá Road, enter the private residential condominium (free entry) and follow the path leading to the beach on Sargento José da Silva Street.
• Parking: Limited, so arriving by ride-share is recommended.

In about 30–40 minutes, you’ll reach the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with an incredible panoramic view of Pedra da Gávea, Morro Dois Irmãos, and the beaches of Barra, São Conrado, Leblon, and Ipanema. It’s also a great spot to watch hang gliders soaring over the coast.

Unlike Rio’s more urban beaches, Prainha offers a completely different experience—one that feels immersed in nature. It’s a top surf spot with some of the best waves in the city, attracting both seasoned surfers and those looking to watch the action from the shore. Even if you’re not into surfing, Prainha is worth visiting for its pristine beauty, soft golden sand, and peaceful surroundings. There are no high-rise buildings or major developments nearby—just ocean, cliffs, and rainforest.

How to Get There

• By Car or Taxi/Uber: Prainha is about an hour’s drive from Zona Sul and is only accessible by car. If you plan to explore the Prainha + Grumari combo and check out some of the nearby attractions (which I highly recommend to make the most of your trip to Rio’s farthest western coastline), renting a car is your best option. However, parking is limited—so arrive early, especially on weekends.

• A nature walk in Parque Natural Municipal da Prainha – Right next to the beach, this protected park offers short rainforest trails leading to stunning viewpoints over the coastline. It’s a great way to appreciate the natural beauty of the area and spot local wildlife, including toucans and monkeys. The trails are easy and provide an excellent mix of hiking and ocean views.

Praia de Grumari: A Wild and Untouched Coastal Retreat

Right next to Prainha, Praia de Grumari shares the same pristine beach atmosphere, offering a true escape from the hustle and bustle of Rio.

Its crystal-clear waters, golden sand, and beautiful green hills make it a favorite among nature lovers and the ones looking for a beach with no urban development in sight. Because it’s located in a protected area, the beach remains unspoiled, with no kiosks or high-rise buildings—just nature at its finest.

• By Car or Taxi/Uber: Grumari is only accessible by car, as there is no direct public transportation. If you are renting a car and driving, and maybe exploring Prainha before, know that parking in Grumari is also limited—so don’t take too long at Prainha, and arrive early at Grumari to secure a spot, especially on weekends.

• A seafood feast in Barra de Guaratiba – Just a short drive from Grumari, Barra de Guaratiba is known for its fantastic seafood restaurants overlooking the mangroves and waterways. For an authentic local experience, head to Bira de Guaratiba, one of the most famous spots, known for its incredible shrimp stew (moqueca de camarão) and stunning views. 
• A visit to Sítio Burle Marx – If you love nature and history, don’t miss Sítio Burle Marx, a UNESCO-listed botanical and landscape masterpiece. Once the home of renowned landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, this estate features over 3,500 species of tropical plants, stunning gardens, and a glimpse into the artist’s creative world. Guided tours are available, making it a great cultural stop before or after your beach day.
• A hike to Pedra do Telégrafo – If you’re up for an adventure, consider hiking to Pedra do Telégrafo, one of Rio’s most famous Instagram spots. The starting point of the trail is in Barra de Guaratiba, about a 15-minute drive from Grumari, more precisely at the stairway next to the Igreja das Dores Church. The hike takes approximately 40–50 minutes and is of moderate difficulty, with some steep sections but nothing too technical. Once at the top, you’ll find the optical illusion rock, where it looks like you’re hanging off a cliff when photographed from the right angle. Be prepared for a long wait in line to take the iconic shot, especially on weekends!

Praia de Itacoatiara: Niterói’s Wild Surf Beach

Located in Niterói, just across the bay from Rio, Praia de Itacoatiara is one of the most beloved off the beaten track beaches in the region. Framed by steep cliffs and lush rainforest, this wild and rugged beach is a paradise for surfers and nature lovers alike. 

Why Visit Praia de Itacoatiara?

Itacoatiara has an entirely different vibe from Rio’s beaches. Its intense waves, golden sand, and surrounding rock formations create a unique landscape, while the nearby hills offer great viewpoints for hikers. The beach is divided into two sections: the main stretch, where waves can get quite rough but perfect for surfing, and a smaller, protected natural pool known as “Costão,” perfect for those who prefer calmer waters.

How to Get There

• By public transportation: Take the ferry from Praça XV in downtown Rio to Niterói (Praça Arariboia terminal), then catch a bus or Uber to Praia de Itacoatiara (about 30–40 minutes by car).
• By Car/Uber: You can also drive or take an Uber directly from Rio, crossing the Rio-Niterói Bridge, which takes about 1 hour depending on traffic.

• A visit to MAC Niterói (Museum of Contemporary Art) – After your beach time, take a trip to MAC Niterói, one of Brazil’s most iconic architectural landmarks. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, this futuristic, spaceship-like museum sits on a cliff overlooking Guanabara Bay, offering some of the best panoramic views of Rio’s skyline. Inside, you’ll find a mix of contemporary art exhibitions. From the beach, you can get there by taking an Uber (around 25 minutes) or a local bus back toward the city center.
